DESCHAMPS REVEALS HALFTIME MESSAGE AFTER FRANCE FIGHTBACK
France coach Didier Deschamps admitted he had strong words for his players at halftime after a sluggish first-half display in their 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal on Tuesday.
The 2018 champions struggled to find their rhythm before the break and were fortunate not to fall behind, but a much-improved second-half performance, inspired by a Kylian Mbappe brace, secured all three points in their Group I opener.
“I am frank with my players,” Deschamps said. “We didn’t have the best first half, we could do better on many levels. I don’t shout, but I do give a piece of my mind.”
Deschamps was pleased with the impact of his tactical changes, including introducing Bradley Barcola, who scored France’s second goal, and moving Michael Olise into a more creative role.
The France boss also praised Mbappe, whose two goals made him the country’s all-time leading scorer.
“People will still criticise him, but he’s an iconic player,” Deschamps said. “With one action he is able to tip the scales and bring his team to victory.”
Responding to criticism of Mbappe’s defensive work, Deschamps was blunt.
“He’s not here to defend. If he wants to miss the first half and score two goals in the second, that’s okay with me.”
The win banished memories of France’s shock defeat to Senegal in their opening match of the 2002 World Cup and gave Les Bleus a strong start to their latest campaign.
France will now face Iraq before concluding their group-stage fixtures against Norway.
