Safety concerns took centre stage in Formula 1 despite Kimi Antonelli’s victory at the
Japanese Grand Prix, as drivers raised alarm over dangerous speed differences
under new regulations.
Antonelli secured the win from pole ahead of Oscar Piastri, benefiting from a well-
timed safety car after admitting, “I had a terrible start… then I was lucky with the
safety car.”
The 19-year-old now leads the championship, though Mercedes boss Toto Wolff
urged caution, saying, “We need to protect him now from people talking about the world
championships.”
However, the race was overshadowed by a heavy crash involving Oliver Bearman,
who narrowly avoided serious injury after smashing into the barriers while attempting
to avoid Franco Colapinto.
Drivers were quick to criticise the current rules, warning that such incidents were
inevitable.
“These kinds of closing speeds and these kinds of accidents were always going to
happen,” said Carlos Sainz, calling for a safer approach.
Bearman echoed those concerns, stating, “We’ve warned the FIA what can happen,
and this has been a really unfortunate result.”
Elsewhere, Max Verstappen’s struggles continued as he finished eighth, openly
questioning the sport’s direction.
“It’s really anti-driving… it’s just not what I want to do,” he said, though adding, “You
don’t need to feel sorry for me, I’ll be fine.”
